About This Webinar

Thinking about the concept of the “personality disorder,” tends to create anxiety among the average clinician. Most clinicians view personality disorders as being virtually impossible to correct because of how deeply entrenched the client’s thoughts and behaviors appear to be.

The mental health field has done an amazing job unnecessarily complicating the concept of personality disorders. As a result, when a clinician is told that a client “has one,” there is little optimism that the client has any potential to change.

However, the thoughts and behaviors exhibited by people with such diagnoses are learned. Anything that a person has learned can be unlearned. This two-part webinar will teach you everything from how to engage the client to be an active participant in the therapy (which usually is the most difficult task) to how to end therapy successfully.

Part One emphasizes engagement and behavior analysis, while Part Two emphasizes behavior change and behavior maintenance.

Without engaging the client, the client will likely drop out of treatment very quickly.  Each personality disorder mentality has it’s unique engagement and collaboration problems.  Without knowing how to engage the client from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, you will not have the opportunity to implement actual therapeutic techniques.

What You Will Learn

  • A functional and effective concept of personality disorders that works
  • How to overcome the client’s unwillingness to engage in CBT
  • How to discover the client’s underlying assumptions that drive their particular personality disorder
  • The qualities of underlying assumptions and why they are very important
  • How to recognize personality-specific problems with collaboration and how to correct them.

Seminar objectives
Describe personality from a cognitive-behavioral perspective
Identify underlying assumptions specific to the various personality disorders
Identify engagement and collaboration issues
Discuss how to correct engagement and collaboration issues

Part-Two (to be held on November 11, 2020) of this series will focus on correcting the thoughts / underlying assumptions / behaviors and helping the client to maintain their positive / rational changes.

Cancellation can be made via Zoom at any time until the commencement of the webinar.   Please direct any questions or concerns to nacbt@nacbt.org”.

Information concerning how you can obtain your CE certificate will be emailed to you at the conclusion of the webinar.
