Special Presentation by Maxie C. Maultsby, Jr., M.D.,
entitled,
AWhat Emotional
Intelligence Really Means,
How to Get It, and How to Best Use It.@
About the Workshops
(1) Three Minute Therapy: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life. This workshop presents for practitioners a how-to approach for the most common emotional and behavioral problems. It shows how the Three-Minute Exercise can be most effectively used with clients as a major tool for overcoming these problems. Presenters: Michael R. Edelstein, Ph.D., Past President of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, and co-author of AThree Minute Therapy: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life.@ He is in private practice in San Francisco, CA and on the Supervisory Faculty of the Albert Ellis Institute. David Ramsay Steele, Ph.D. is co-author of AThree Minute Therapy: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life@ and Editorial Director, Open Court Publishing Company.
(2) Anger Redefined: Myths, Misconceptions, and Methods of Change. This presentation is likely to not confirm what you presently believe about this often misunderstood emotion. It will provocatively question much of the conventional wisdom about anger while unangrily, yet unpamperingly replacing misinformation with corrective ideas that will better contribute to your long range happiness and survival. Bill Borcherdt, ACSW, BCD is a certified supervisor for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy with over thirty years of counseling experience. He also has over twenty years of experience teaching graduate and undergraduate courses for the University of Wisconsin System. His four books, Think Straight! Feel Great!, You Can Control Your Feelings!, Head over Heart in Love, and Feeling Right When Things Go Wrong were chosen by Behavioral Science Book Service as featured selections.
(3) Getting HIP with the Human Interaction Program. This workshop will address the three Principles of Human Interaction: (1) You get the behavior you tolerate, (2) Others will not change until you change first, and (3) The item that has to be changed is your excessive toleration. To stop being excessively tolerant involves a significant understanding of CBT, when to apply it, when it cannot be applied, when to leave a relationship, and which solution must always be avoided. Fundamental issues such as management of anger, depression, guilt, other pity, and fear of rejection will also be covered. Paul A. Hauck, Ph.D. is the executive director of the Chicago Institute for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and has been in practicing clinical psychology for the past forty-five years. He has written sixteen books which have been translated into seventeen languages. His books include, How to Stand Up for Yourself, The Three Faces of Love, Overcoming the Rating Game, and How to Cope with People who Drive You Crazy.
(4) CBT and Evolutionary Psychology: What are the parallels? Recently, the media has promoted an analysis of human behavior that relies on the insights from modern biology. However, many misunderstandings have arisen, such as the naturalistic fallacy (Aif it=s natural then it=s good@) or that we robotically follow our genetic inheritance. This workshop will address: (1) the HOW and WHY of feelings and behaviors, (2) clarity about our inner voice and why certain problems remain difficult problems, (3) integration of the positive aspects of evolutionary psychology with CBT, and (4) looking skeptically at certain exaggerated versions of evolutionary psychology. Presenter: Nando Pelusi, Ph.D. is on the Supervisory Faculty of the Albert Ellis Institute and conducts numerous workshops there. He is an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at St. John=s University. He currently practices CBT and REBT in New York City and has appeared on various television and radio stations as a consultant. Jim Brody, Ph.D., Founding editor for the evolutionary psychology forum for Behavior.net. He started the series on evolutionary psychiatry for the Cape Code Institute. He's working on two new books: "Here Comes Granddad again: Taking charge of our genes" and "Natures Toolbox: Psychopathology and evolutionary outcomes."
(5) Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in Life Treatening Illness.. Although psychological approaches to somatic illness are becoming increasingly popular under the label of alternative therapies, at this point there are few systematic approaches to healing . Studies have proven that CBT is effective in improving quality of life and doubling survival in patients with advanced cancer. This workshop will present a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral approach addressing emotional, cognitive, behavioral, social, and existential / spiritual issues in life threatening illness.. Presenters: Mariusz Wirga, M.D. is a psychiatrist at the Las Vegas Medical Center in New Mexico and Medical Director of the Simonton Health Institute in California. He received extensive training in cognitive behavioral therapies (including RET, RBT, and DBT). He has applied cognitive therapies to persons with cancer and AIDS, as well as a wide array of psychiatric disorders. Michael DeBernardi, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist at the Las Vegas Medical Center in New Mexico. He has seven years experience working from a CBT framework and currently applies CBT to a population of in-patient adolescent sex offenders. He is a certified Rational Behavior Therapist and provides on-going training and supervision to mental health professionals throughout New Mexico.
(6) Pain Management Therapy Strategies. This workshop will present the clinician with valuable information on treating chronic pain clients with cognitive-behavioral assessment and therapy. Therapeutic techniques, including therapeutic imagery, hypnosis, and relaxation training for chronic pain will be presented in addition to the myths and misconceptions of chronic pain. Presenter: Robbie Greenfield, MA is a private practice counselor who treats chronic pain individuals and conducts chronic pain self-help therapy groups. She presents on such topics as stress management, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and hypnosis. She has been studying chronic pain since 1991 and began the first fibromyalgia group in her area in 1994.
(7) Cognitive-Behavioral Approach to Workplace Anxiety. People in the workplace are confronted with the pressures of producing quality work, adapting to change, performing job responsibilities with heavy workloads, and juggling family and / or personal needs. This workshop will identify and address these issues. Many mental health counselors in private practice and hospital settings are and will deal with these issues on two fronts - personally as well as professionally. Dr. Gatto has developed models of brief and encounter therapy based on a cognitive-behavioral approach to address the causes of workplace anxiety. Presenter: Rex P. Gatto, Ph.D., for the past fourteen years, has provided training and workshops on pressing business issues to many domestic organizations and members of the Fortune 100 companies. He has authored several books, including, Controlling Stress in the Workplace, Teamwork Through Flexible Leadership, and Reflections from the Workplace. Dr. Gatto has made numerous radio and television appearances as well. In 1988 he received the ASTD Speaker=s Award, the ASTD HRD Excellence Award in 1994, and the ASTD Creative Contribution Award in 1996.
(8) Critical Care Model for Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions. Cognitive-behavioral treatment approaches will be presented. Presenters: Dennis L. Gilliams, Ph.D. is an educator and consultant. Tyron Gilliams, Sr., Ph.D. is a therapist, educator, and minister. Werber Bryan Hospital, Columbia , SC has had in place a staff that provides daily cognitive psychotherapy to patients. This program is very unique for an in-patient setting. It has been a success largely because in addition to providing psychotherapy to patients, the department also provides training to counselors and psychologists in the local Mental Health Centers throughout the state to promote continuity of care. This workshop is designed to give you the information concerning the patient care provided and the type of training given to providers in the community. Presenter: James R. Perryman, Ed.D., is Director of Counseling and Training Services and Director of the Rational Behavior Therapy Training Center at G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital in Columbia, SC. Presenters: Mariusz Wirga, M.D. is a psychiatrist at the Las Vegas Medical Center in New Mexico and Medical Director of the Simonton Health Institute in California. The workshop presents the dangers of counteracting low self-esteem with high self-esteem, and also presents a variety of exercises, role-playing, and live demonstrations for opting out of the self-rating game. The instructors= unique team approach - combining urogynecologic physical therapy / sex therapy and psychotherapy / sex therapy for comprehensive body-mind integration - will be introduced.
