About The Seminar

Using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to Help People Overcome Marital / Relationship Problems

Rational Living Therapists have a very complicated theory as to why partners have problems in their relationship: (1) they are not getting what they want from each other, (2) they are making themselves miserable over that fact, and (3) they share their misery with each other in a variety of ways.  Obviously, this is a pretty straightforward explanation.  However, the reason(s) the partners do not obtain what they want from each other can be much more complicated.

RLT marital / relationship therapy has two phases -- the indirect and the direct treatment of the relationship.  The indirect phase involves teaching the partners rational self-counseling skills to enable them to calm down and to approach each other in a much more rational manner.  The direct phase involves determining what they want from each other, helping them to obtain it, and dealing with difference concerning those wants.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify at least five reasons partners do not obtain what they want from each other
2. Discuss at least two ways to help partners overcome resentment
3. Practice from a Cognitive Model of Relationship Problems
